You have probably already heard about the first time I met an Algerian person. This is the story of how we met. I was about to head to a wedding reception in my town. When I heard about it, I didn't even hesitate. I quickly got a few tickets in and my friend, who was a photographer from her country, suggested me to do a photo shoot. At first I thought it was a joke, but I was actually really excited. I thought I would meet some nice people that are from Algeria and that would give me a chance to connect with them and show how I am from there. The wedding reception was going to be in the same city as my friend's hometown. I was excited to meet new friends from my country and to give the wedding reception an opportunity to feel like it was a normal, normal, normal day. So I started to go to the reception with a really good intention of trying to meet my friends, but I didn't feel so at home. I was like, "Okay, well, I can't go to the wedding reception." At that moment I realized that it was impossible, I could only do that if I didn't come. I was like, "How can I do that? I'm already here."

At the reception there was a man who spoke French and looked like a movie star. It was really funny because I was talking to him in Arabic, but he was from France. I was shocked because this man spoke to me in French and to my surprise he understood me perfectly. He gave me his phone number and gave me a phone call that I could have with him. I called him edmonton muslim and was able to say vivastreet pakistani something like, "Hello" and he was able to translate it, I didn't say anything. He didn't even know I was there. He just said, "Okay, I'm the guy that's going to go to the wedding reception. I will see you there." And I said, "Alright, but I am not going there. I want to talk to you for a minute." He was very good. He was very kind, very polite and very friendly. He didn't ask me why I was going there. I'm not sure if he even knew who I was. We ended up talking for like 5 minutes. He asked me if I had any family there. I said no. He said, "Okay, and if I'm not mistaken, you're Muslim." I said, "No, I'm not. I don't have a Muslim family anywhere, and I'm not going to pretend I am, so please don't ask me any questions, I'm already going."

As I was leaving, he said, "I muslims marriage am so sorry I never told you this before but, for you to know, you're a fucking Muslim." I thought, that sounds horrible. I was in shock.

In my time living in Germany, we had been to a lot of museums. We even went to the GDR. We went to a museum in the former Yugoslavia, it was an extremely good museum, but it was so depressing.
