The mosque was started in 2005, when we saw muslims marriage a need to bring people together and get help and advice and support for people who had problems in life. It was the perfect fit for us because our members were all involved in the wider community, working for different causes and helping others. We started out in our new office (pictured above) and started giving support to people in our community, then we had a number of meetings with local councils and charities to see if we could use their space. When we had our first meeting in 2012, we had over a hundred people come to the mosque to hear us speak. We had just one meeting with the council but we have since had many more. We have done a lot of work with local schools, we have given advice to local businesses, we have worked with the local community, we have been helping to change the attitude towards our community and the attitudes of the Government and we are now working with other agencies to provide a safe space for the Muslim community. The mosque has a great impact, the people in the local area are very happy because we have given them hope and we can show them there is a safe place in the area where they can come and have a space where they can feel safe and be comfortable. We have started working with the local schools who wanted to know what we could do to give children the best start in life and how we can help them to make friends and learn about Islam. This has helped them to make friendships with Muslim girls and boys and it has opened up a whole new avenue for them. Our work with the schools has given us more experience and skills.
