Kim has spoken out about her experiences as an immigrant and the challenges she has faced as a woman. When she first arrived in Portland, Kim says she didn't feel welcome. "I didn't feel like I was part of a community," Kim says. "I felt I was the only one who was an immigrant, that all the Muslim people were immigrants. I wasn't allowed to do what I needed to do because all the Muslim women's groups were too focused on politics." "I had to fight for that space, and it was not easy," Kim explains. "It was really hard." Despite being a member of an already-strong community, Kim says she still feels "tied up with all these things." "I don't know where I want to be. Where is my voice? Where am I going to go when I grow old?" she asks. Kim started to feel more comfortable vivastreet pakistani with her Muslim identity during her internship at the Islamic Center of Portland. "I felt like I could do more as a woman here," she says, and her personal relationships with the other women were improved as a result. "I could talk to them about being a Muslim without being like, 'oh my gosh, these people are such hateful, terrible people.'" Kim also credits a change in her personal life with the growth in her social identity. She is now open about her relationships with men. "It was definitely a struggle with me being a lesbian, and I was afraid to be open about it with the people in my life," she says. "And I was like, 'Well, there's no shame in being in a relationship, if you want it to be, but if you don't want to be in a relationship, then that's totally okay.' It was really freeing. I just had a lot more freedom." She feels as though her life has changed in terms of her social life, too. "I think being open about myself, and being comfortable in my own skin, is just so important. I was just a big tomboy, but now I have a lot of confidence, I really like my body, and it's just a lot better for me." I ask Kim if she has ever felt like a failure. "Yeah," she responds, "I don't feel like I have done anything wrong. It's the way that I was raised and that I was given. But I feel as though I was never allowed to express myself, to be who I am. I didn't grow up with a lot of people who look like me, and we were always told that it was the way things should be." I ask her if she thinks people's attitudes towards immigrants will change. "I don't know, I think that people will probably keep going as they are now, but I think that it will be a lot more more relaxed. People are kinder now. People are not afraid of the dark anymore, it's more accepted. It's easier to say no." Aisha agrees, "I think the society will come a lot more open now." She continues, "We are now allowed to have open relationships, and people have more rights than before.
