We are looking for someone who is comfortable speaking English to newcomers to Vancouver and comfortable with their place in our community. The mosque needs the help of a professional to take care of the many people of colour in the community. As an outreach volunteer, you will be an integral part of muslims marriage helping bring people together in the mosque, from non-believers to believers. The Vancouver Islamic Community Center has been in existence since the early 70's. We offer classes on Islam in English to anyone who wants to learn about Islam and the community around it. VICC was established as a mosque in 1964 by the Muslims of the city of Vancouver in response to a need for a more Islamic oriented center in the city. VICC provides many cultural activities and classes for a wide variety of ages and walks. In addition, the VICC is also the place where a number of Muslim families live in an integrated environment. The VICC is not a Muslim Mosque, but it is the place to meet other Muslim groups, and for those who are new, there are community events held at vivastreet pakistani the VICC to promote peace, harmony and understanding between the various communities. We are located in Chinatown, at 16th Street and Fraser Street. The Mosque is open every day from 9am to 6pm except on Fridays and Saturdays. (The mosque is closed on the third Friday of the month, and the following three Saturdays). You are welcome to stop in for a cup of coffee at any time and/or join in the Friday evening prayers. The mosque is a very good place to meet other muslims and talk. There is a nice community room upstairs where you can have a chat or simply listen to a few tunes. There are a few edmonton muslim prayer mats in the room that are provided by the mosque. There is a prayer rug outside, and inside, there is a small mosque with a big room for prayer. The prayer rug has the Islamic symbol for 'al-hamdulillah' - the meaning of which is "there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger" which means that Muslims in the west should know that there is no god but Allah and that Muslims should not fear Him. The mosque is free to the public and is open 7 days a week. The Friday prayer service is a good time to get to know someone.
