I have to say that the first time I read about the issue of the "no-longer-required-waiting-periods" of marriage in Islam was very painful. I remember how much I felt it was a huge violation of my religious freedom to have to wait for the next step in my own spiritual development, but to have it applied to non-Muslims and to have it enforced by a secular law.
I still remember that day, and I didn't know what to do about it. I had to make the best of it. I prayed about it and went to the mosque, and I studied about it. I got my "spiritual direction" and a sense of what it meant for me to be part of this community, and I became comfortable.
I was even happy with how things turned out. We came back from a trip, and I met a good friend from school, and the next morning she started telling me that she'd been praying in the mosque for 3 years and it had worked. I remember praying that morning and thinking, wow, this is the best I can do.
At that point, things were going great for me. I was so focused on that I didn't really think about the fact that I was having sex. My girlfriend and I had a long discussion about this, and she explained that she'd been praying with me for 2 years and now I was starting to realize what I was missing, and that she knew about it because her parents knew.
At that point, we had our first sex.
I was still young and naive, but I remember the feeling of excitement. There was no judgment here. I couldn't help but think of how good it felt to have someone with me who understood. We kissed, and I took her from her nightstand and climbed on top of her. Then, I felt her touch my chest, and I knew what she was trying to do, but I couldn't stop her. She was a goddess.
I was also surprised and nervous. My girlfriend was still an unknown quantity. She had been dating sweedish men a man for almost 2 years, and I was just trying to get to know her. However, when I took her in my arms and put her head on my shoulder, I felt a strong need. I wanted her to love me back. But she was just an unknown quantity to me, and a mystery to her. There was no way she could have ever loved me back.
