More than 30 million people, the majority of them in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, are married to five or more men and have their husbands as their spiritual leader, and to be precise the prophet of Islam. Muhammad, the father of Islam and its spiritual leader, was the fourth son of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, a native of Mecca and a leader of the tribe of Ali. Ali ibn Abi Talib, the third son of Muhammad, married four women and bore two of his own children. His sister's name was Fatima, and her husband's name was Ali. The other three sons, Ali, Yusuf, and Ali bin Abi Talib, married six other women and bore six of their own children. Two of these children married and had one son with each of the three other wives. Two of the sons, Abdullah and Muhammad bin Ali, were in prison, but one was still married. It is a great irony that so many of the Qur'anic verses on marriage and polygyny are so clear and concise. This is a reference to the Hadith which are reports of the life of the Prophet. The Hadith is generally accepted by modern Muslims as accurate and has been taken to be the Qur'anic word of the Prophet. However, there are a few serious problems with the Hadith and the Qur'anic teaching about polygyny and marriage in general. Firstly, the Qur'an doesn't say anything about the Hadith at all, only that the Hadith is authentic and it is a fact that men and women married to one another had been to the Prophet. There is also no mention of polygyny at all in the Qur'an either. The Hadith, therefore, is a statement of fact, not revelation. As for Hadrat Mu'awiyah, the Hadith report about him being married to his brother-in-law, Uthman ibn Affan Al-Husayn, is reported by some of his companions and is considered authentic. The Hadith has also been reported to be authentic by the companions of Al-Tabari, Al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Al-Haytham and Ibn Hibban.
