A lot of people ask this question. Some just assume the number is about 1.4 billion, while others say there are 100 million. I will argue that the answer is somewhere in the middle and the numbers may be more or less than that.
If we want to be a bit more specific, it will take us through the time span from 1.4 billion to over 5 billion. The only way we can know for certain that we have 100 million muslims is to find a country that has a population of about 100 million people (or 1.4 billion). For the rest of the world, we need to do more research.
This is an interesting question. You can look at the map and see that the entire Muslim world has a population of between 200 million and 400 million people. The numbers seem pretty high. So why are so many muslims there?
You can't tell if you are in fact a muslim just by looking at someone. It's much more complicated than that. For example, when I was at my first airport, there was a lot of muslims around me, but I wasn't sure whether I was a muslim.
I got to my gate in the back of the building and there were hundreds of people all trying to get in. So my first question to them was "who are you?" Some of them just yelled "Mosque" to the others. I had to keep asking them what they are saying so that I could get an answer. They didn't know, but I figured that they must know at some point.
Then I asked "how many countries are you from?" The first one to answer back "Muslim countries" and I asked "What's the difference?" He said "Mosque, mosque, mosque, it's all one" He was wearing a traditional garb, but I figured that edmonton muslim this was another form of a Muslim. So I gave him the question back and explained that this is an important fact. I did it again and said "What's the difference between a Mosque and a Mosque?" "Mosques are built of the same materials as the mosques we are used to, except the doors, they are made of metal" I could tell that this is going to be the next logical question. I had him tell me that he was born and raised in Egypt, in Morocco. Then I told him that he must have some kind of a question. I knew that I had to do something about this. I asked him about how many countries he was from. "How many countries are you from?" He responded "Iraq, Somalia, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iran. I would say that most of my country's are Muslim." "Ok, ok, but do you have any friends?" He responded "No, not a single one." "And your name is Muhammad?" He responded "I am Muhammad, the son of God and the prophet of the Muslims." "Okay, let me explain what you do, what is the point?" "I am the guardian of Islam and the Caliph of the Muslims. I am the only one who has the authority to change the rules of Islam. I am the one who made Islam as it is today." "Ah, well that's great, but what do you mean by that?" He answered "I don't know what Islam is today, how do I know what is going to happen to this religion in the future?" "Ok, I'll show you, if you muslims marriage have a question." So he showed me a question: "I am from Syria, where is the holy shrine of Al-Masjid-al-Haram?" I answered: "In the center of the capital of the country." "Ok, you vivastreet pakistani may go in there." "Ok, I will stay in front of the shrine for the duration of the time it takes me to go in there." The next few days he stayed in the shrine until my prayers. My prayer was five times more powerful than his prayer. The last time, he went in there but he never left my side. So I stayed for one week. I never asked for anything else from him, and I never touched him. I even started to pray for the first time. The only thing that changed was that I was now in love with this man. He would not allow me to marry him and I was scared. But I wanted to find a man who would be faithful to his wife. I was so afraid that I did not tell my parents or my friends. And it was too late. The night was the worst night of my life. I was so excited to go home that I forgot sweedish men how to walk. And the last thing I remembered was waking up in a hospital with a needle sticking into my finger. And I felt so bad that I asked the doctor to shave my head. He was a great guy, but the feeling of not being able to talk to anyone is a very real feeling to me. So I started to talk to people on twitter who have muslim friends.
