I was raised in a Muslim home. I can't recall the exact date but my mother always said it was "just after 9/11." When I turned 7, my mother would show me a book called Islam and the Modern World. It had a page with an illustration of a man with an overcoat who was holding a book. I can't remember the name of the illustration, but she would say it was a "pro-Mussolini illustration." I remember it being about a man who had a book and a book, and I wanted a book too.
I was 6. My mother would ask if I was "going to school," and I would say "yes." I would pretend that my mom was in a car and then the car would suddenly change and then I would suddenly be in a car. The car would be so fast that I would jump out of the car, then it would slow down and then stop. I think I also asked for a "pizza," and my mom asked for "two." This is a very strange, little story, I know, but it's my mother and I didn't understand what was happening to me or why it was happening. She was so scared that I could not understand anything, and I really couldn't understand what I had been told. I was a big, strong little boy. I could not run as fast as the others around me. I was very tall and skinny. There was nothing about me that would fit in a man's hands or the hands of his wife. I was completely cut off from my family. It was hard to figure out why it had happened, even to myself. It was like they cut me from the same cloth. There was nothing to do. No one to tell me why I was like that. But, if my brother had wanted to marry me, I would have been glad to go along with it. There's an entire community of muslims in Australia that would accept the concept. But, I don't have any of those people. I'm a kafir, and I'm from the subcontinent. I'm very proud to be from there, but if I'm going to marry someone I don't have to have a lot of connections to. I'm happy being married, as long as we're happy together. The reason I don't date muslims is because it's not about them. There are also some aspects of Islam that I think are not compatible with my values. I think that if I had the opportunity to date a muslim I'd choose a chaste woman. But if I'm honest, I can't.
You are married, your husband is muslim. He is not your friend. You're not getting his help in anything. You're not even his friend. There is no way you can become friends and be muslim.
